Mark Mullen Seminar at PJ Jiujitsu Club

mark mullen bj malaysia
Prof Mark Mullen @ PJ Jiujitsu Club
Professor Mark Mullen was in town recently and we had the opportunity to host him for an impromptu seminar at PJ Jiujitsu Club. Mark started his BJJ journey with Marcus Soares and is a black belt under Josh Russell and is currently based in Vietnam (K1 Fitness & Fight Factory).

After being formally introduced to all the participants, Prof Mark started the class with a quick warmup in the form of solo drills, involving lots of hip movements, and then went through some of his philosophies and concepts on escapes from inferior positions. He then showed us some techniques on how to avoid being controlled by your opponent when he is about to take side control position. This involves having to hand fight, redirect the opponent's head and then recover guard. Then he covered the elbow push escape (similar to how Marcelo Garcia does it).

Also covered were escapes from modified kesa gatame (two variations), escape from knee on belly (simple but effective hip escape), defense and escape from the kimura. Time was well used to drill all the techniques taught to the class.

Overall we had a great experience, and we hope to get Prof Mark to teach us again the next time he comes down to Malaysia.

PJ Jiujitsu Club at the Copa da Malasia VI (2017)

It was a busy weekend for some of the PJ Jiujitsu Club members, as they participated at the Copa da Malasia VI Grappling Competition at Jaya Shopping Centre.

Menard and Derek competed on the first day of competition, which was gi, while Nigel played on the second day, which was nogi. Menard fought in the blue belt masters over 75kg division while Derek competed in the white belt under 70kg division. Nigel played the masters blue belt nogi over 75kg division. This was their first taste of competitive BJJ.

All three guys performed well, gained precious experience, and at the end of the day, we ended up taking home a couple of medals too! Thanks also to all the other PJ Jiujitsu Club's team members and friends who came out on both days to support our competitors! Well done boys!

PJ Jits at the Keenan Cornelius Seminar in Kuala Lumpur

KEENAN CORNELIUS SEMINAR @ MONARCHY MMA GYM, KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 2017

American BJJ superstar Keenan Cornelius was in Kuala Lumpur recently (21/6/2017) for a massive seminar. Organized by Monarchy MMA/Hyperfly Asia, the event drew BJJ fanatics from all over Malaysia and also outside of Malaysia. Ive not seen a gathering of so many BJJ players (around 60 people) from various clubs/academies under one roof before! It was quite a sight.

A few of us from PJ Jiujitsu Club were on hand to experience the event. It was a good opportunity to pick up some tips and tricks from one of the world's best BJJ player. Although I was a bit disappointed that Keenan opted not to teach his famous worm guard, but what he chose to teach on that night itself, what is known as "Layers of Guard Retention" series, was useful and maybe more applicable in a day to day normal BJJ game.

So we had good training, and had great fun throughout the seminar. We also got to witness Keenan roll with almost everyone at the seminar, which was pretty cool! Also ...  got to meet new friends and caught up with some old friends as well.

Hopefully the organizers bring Keenan Cornelius back again next year so he can teach us his worm guard system!

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

what is jiu-jitsu

If you are looking for a fun, physical sport to participate in, look no further than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). It is a martial art that is great for learning some self-defence as well as to help you get fitter and stronger.

So what exactly is BJJ? Check out some of these demos, which will show you what the martial art looks like.

Progression: Thank you, Coaches, Students and Friends

I wish to say a big thank you to Coach Samuel Wee who promoted me to brown belt after a recent training session with him. After starting my training in Jiu Jitsu from the year 2001/02, reaching brown belt was beyond imagining. Heck, even getting to blue belt then was considered a major achievement (by my own standards)...

I remember back in early 2000, there were no BJJ gyms to be found anywhere in Malaysia. We actually had to train in "garage gyms".... The first gym to officially teach Jiu-Jitsu was Ding's, with Sam as the coach (then a blue belt). That was around year 2002. Today there are so many great BJJ and MMA gyms that have come up, and I'm glad to have stuck around long enough to see the evolution and progress of the art here in Malaysia.

Anyway I want to also give a special thanks to my fellow Coach Tirmizi "Mandeng" for all his encouragement and guidance thru the years at PJ Jiujitsu Club. Also a big thanks to my students (past and present) - you have all played a big part in my personal growth in this awesome martial art/sport.

On the wrong side of 40s now, I am not getting any younger. But as long as I am physically able, I will continue to do my best to share whatever little knowledge I have with my teammates here at PJ Jits.

PJ Jits at the Copa de Malaysia BJJ Competition

Competition area

PJ Jits at the Copa da Malasia BJJ Competition

It's 2016! A couple of our members from PJ Jiujitsu Club decided to take part in the second edition of the Copa de Malasia BJJ competition. It would be their first attempt at competing against players from other clubs.

The event was held at the Jaya Shopping Centre in Section 14 Petaling Jaya. A great venue for a jiu jitsu competition for sure! Indoors, air conditioning, lots of f & b outlets, ample parking....

The competition also had an international flavour with teams and competitors coming from all corners of the world - Vietnam, Cambodia, US, Japan, Singapore, Middle East, Philippines etc.

Fights underway
Rifhan had a match (under 64 kg white belt) in morning portion of the competition. He fought hard against his opponent from GFT but did not manage to win. He eventually lost by points. Vincent fared slightly better (over 65 kg white belt masters) and managed to win by submission in his first match against his opponent from Monarchy. He was unable to repeat the feat in his second match and lost to a player from Cristiano Kamanishi's team.

Pass that guard...
All in all it was another fun (but stressful and tiring) outing for the team and it would be good for them to compete the next time if opportunity permits.

All done. Time to go home

PJ JITS MEMBER MAKES WAVES IN DUBLIN, IRELAND!

Huge congrats to our PJ Jiujitsu Club team member Ian Khong who is now doing his tertiary studies in Dublin Ireland. He recently competed in his first BJJ tournament at the Dublin International Open and came out tops with a gold medal (white belt rooster division).

Ian submitted both his opponents in less than 1 minute (americana and ezekial choke), and also pulled off a a berimbolo from half guard top (taught by our Coach Mandeng)!

Hope to hear more good news from this young man!
